Ronald John Epping was born on May 26, 1949 in Sioux City, Iowa to John Henry and Agatha Catherine (Krogman) Epping. He lived his youth in Sheldon, Iowa where he attended St. Patrick’s Catholic School through the eighth grade. He attended Sheldon High School until his junior year when he moved with his family to Watertown, South Dakota and finished out his high school years. He enlisted in the United States Navy in 1969, served for two years and was honorably discharged. He lived in various places. In 1976, he moved to Fargo, North Dakota where he worked as a welder. He later moved to St. Cloud, Minnesota.

He married Norma Jean Diechert of Fargo, North Dakota on November 19, 1977. They were blessed with two sons, Joshua and Derek who he cherished spending time with.

When Ron was a child in Sheldon, he loved entering the foot races during Soybean Days. They ran for silver dollars and back then that was a lot of money! As many people in Sheldon may recall, his nickname was “Rabbit” and rightfully so. He was very fast on his feet.

In his later years, Ron was an avid fisherman and loved bowling and was very good at it. He also enjoyed woodcarving. He loved carving things and giving them to the patients at the VA Hospital in St. Cloud, Minnesota, where he took pride in volunteering.

Ron passed away unexpectedly at his home in Waite Park, Minnesota on Tuesday, June 25, 2013, at the age of 64 years and 30 days.

Those left to cherish his memories are his wife, Norma Jean Epping of Fargo, ND; two sons, Joshua John Epping of Fergus Falls, MN, and Derek Bernard Epping of Fargo, ND; his mother, Agatha Epping of Sheldon, IA; all of his siblings, Char Mercer of Sanborn, IA, Mary (Jim) Smith of Sioux Falls, SD, Bob J. (Suzi) Epping of Sanborn, IA, Steve Epping (significant other Denice Titus) of Sheldon, IA, Jerry (Penni) Epping of Des Moines, IA; and many nieces, nephews and friends. He was preceded in death by his father, John H. Epping and brothers-in-law, Ron Chinn and Larry G. Mercer.
